Tuesday afternoon, Marvel announced via Twitter that Frank Castle would play a notable role in the second season of Daredevil.
Frank Castle is also known as the vigilante with a lethal and slightly twisted sense of justice, “The Punisher.”
The role will be played by Jon Bernthal, who recently gained fame from his work as “Shane” on The Walking Dead and in The Wolf of Wall Street. Marvel’s full press release also reported that “Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”
My reaction
You guys. Stuff is going to HIT. THE. FAN.
This is absolutely the right move to keep the momentum from Daredevil’s first season rolling. After portraying Wilson Fisk so ridiculously well, they needed an equally talented actor and a character with the right amount of complexity to follow suit. Jon Bernthal is an impressive actor with a good list of credits behind him, and seeing him as the Punisher will hopefully take the series to a whole new level. I know Tom Hardy had recently said he wanted to be Punisher, but I think Bernthal has the acting chops to knock it out of the park here.
We don’t quite know which side Castle will be on yet, but the statement from Marvel and the new promo poster seem to imply he’ll be a villain. If that’s the case, then Daredevil definitely has his work cut out for him. However, it could be interesting to see Castle start out as hero and then slowly move into the villain’s role (or vice versa).
What do you think of this casting?
